I cry in despair as this deep sadness and longing for love drives me to seek death. No remedies or ancient spells can stop the monsters that haunt my dreams. Yet, I cry out to you, O Dark Mother, the only one who can save me from the clutches of this hell. PLEASE COME TO ME!
Masma Dream World is the experimental project led by Bhakta artist, music producer, butoh practitioner and sound therapist Devi Mambouka.
With roots in Gabon and Singapore, Mambouka is a child of the world. She recalls rainforest rituals and the presence of ghosts and spirits throughout her childhood in Gabon before immigrating to The Bronx. Here, instead of forests, she lost herself in record stores and began a spiritual, educational journey, DJing and immersing herself in NYC’s nightlife.
Driven by Devotion
She studied religions of all kinds but found her guides in magic, maternal Hindu ancestors, the Black Madonna and Kali, the Hindu goddess of creation and destruction, and the mother of the forgotten ones.
It’s a really intense kind of performance art. She takes it very seriously. She’s really committed. And I think the music is just scary and beautiful.”
